Top 8 Craziest TikTok Challenges That Gave Trauma For Life

Top 8 Craziest TikTok Challenges That Gave Trauma For Life

TikTok has long since been associated with viral Internet challenges. Want to jump on the hottest viral challenge trending online? TikTok’s the place for you.

It’s given birth to some of the best challenges of the century, bringing smiles and joy to viewers all over the world. There’s nothing better than creating something that makes people smile, right? Even better if it goes viral on TikTok!

Yes, it’s all fun and games – that is, until someone breaks a neck or rips out their teeth.

Don’t believe us? Well, read on to see the top 8 craziest TikTok challenges of the year, from embarrassingly ridiculous to plain horrifying.

1) DIY Vampire Fangs

Halloween is the time to dress up and party, but these TikTok users took it a tad too far when they superglued fake vampire fangs to their teeth. This Halloween trend went viral the past year when the hashtag #VampireFangs amassed 9 million views, spurring people to hop on the bandwagon and fasten fake fangs on their teeth.

The viral challenge, which started off as a Halloween inspiration, ended up depicting several people struggling to remove the faux fangs from their teeth. Some even resorted to wire clippers and a three-hour long, painful visit to the cosmetician!

I’m all for the spirit of Halloween, but if you’re using nail glue to stick fake fangs on your teeth without a surefire way to remove them safely, then you’ve not only got a costume emergency – you’ve got a dental crisis!

Several TikTokers learned this the hard way when they spent hours trying to remove the faux fangs and resigned themselves to the local dentist – who, unsurprisingly, advised against the challenge and cited that nail glue was poisonous and, in all cases, shouldn’t be applied to your teeth.

2) Frozen Honey Challenge

How much honey is too sweet?

You’re about to find out with the #FrozenHoneyChallenge, which has TikTok users filling a bottle with honey and freezing it overnight. Then, they eat it.

One user posted a video of her downing the frozen honey in one go and said that she felt sick immediately after, stating that she wouldn’t do it again.

For a hashtag that garnered a whopping 600 million views, users reported some not-so-sweet side effects – one that has them running to the bathroom and expelling their insides out with diarrhea.

3) Pee Your Pants Challenge

Maybe it was the boredom of lockdown..or maybe humanity has gone insane, but one TikTok user found a new way to gross everyone out when he started the #peeyourpantschallenge.

How this took off as a viral challenge, I have no idea, but 19-year old comedian Liam Meyer did not anticipate it either when he announced the prank and proceeded to heed nature’s call on camera. He stated that it was just to make fun of Internet challenges and was surprised that it actually went viral, adding that “people on the Internet will do anything as long as you call it a challenge and add a hashtag”.

Whether he meant it or not, the damage has been done – the video spawned several hundred urine-imitators proudly recording themselves peeing on camera with 70,000 likes and 2 million views.

If there’s anything to be learned from this, it’s that people will do the craziest TikTok things for entertainment – even if it means embarrassing themselves.

4) Corn Cob Challenge

What’s a better way to eat corn?

TikTok: Sticking a corncob on a drill and eating it as it rotates.

Crazy, right?

But if there was a celebrity bold enough to attempt this crazy TikTok challenge, it’s Jason Derulo.

The singer tried to eat a corncob attached to a power drill as a way to accelerate the corn-eating process – only to have his front tooth chipped off.

He wasn’t the only one. Another man in China lost his front teeth when he attempted the challenge, and a woman had a chunk of her hair ripped out after it got caught in the drill.

5) The Cereal Challenge

At first mention, the ‘Cereal Challenge’ sounds innocent enough. You lay back with your mouth open as a friend pours milk and cereal into your mouth and attempts to eat from it. Gross, but not life-threatening. Most of them end up spitting it out anyway, as demonstrated by popular YouTube star Bretman Rock.

Then someone of course takes it a step further and decides to involve their pets as well. Humans can do it, why not dogs? Not because it is incredibly gross and unhygienic when your dog licks the insides of your mouth after cleaning their butt, but hey, to each their own.

Jokes aside, it can also become a problem for the ‘human bowl’ if they inhale the milk inside their lungs and choke to death.

6) Face Wax Challenge

Full facial waxing has been a sort of beauty trend of late, but TikTokers turned it into a challenge by dripping wax all over the person’s face, covering their lips, eyes, and nose, before tearing it off in one huge rip.

Sounds painful? Yeah, I bet it is.

Beauty procedures have their sacrifices, but this challenge was downright painful to watch. Not only is it damaging the skin, but the wax hardens your airways and can make it difficult to breathe. If one isn’t careful enough, the danger of suffocation is real.

7) The Coronavirus Challenge

You’d think people would be smart enough to be extra sanitary during a pandemic. Apparently that’s not the case for Ava Louise, a 22-year-old social media influencer who went viral for all the wrong reasons when she licked an airplane toilet seat and dubbed it ‘the coronavirus challenge’.

She got more than she bargained for – viral fame and enraged netizens. People were slamming her on Twitter for her insensitivity towards the deadly virus, especially for those who were infected.

I wish I could say no one was dumb enough to imitate her actions. Sadly, another social media influencer Larz took up the challenge, licking the toilet seat in a public loo. He wasn’t as lucky as Louise, though. A few days later, he posted a tweet stating he was infected with COVID-19 and even uploaded videos and photos as evidence.

I guess it goes without saying to not lick public toilet seats and make fun of coronavirus that has taken more than 4 million lives to date. That is, unless you want the wrath of the Internet upon you.

8) The Blackout Challenge

For all the craziest TikTok challenges of the year, this takes the cake.

The Blackout Challenge is also known as ‘the fainting game’, where users were challenged to choke themselves until they pass out. Whether they regained consciousness or not, that was up to lady luck. A 10-year-old girl found herself short on it when she tied a belt around her neck and died from asphyxiation.

It’s obviously a very dangerous game and should be banned. TikTok users are encouraged to report anyone who is seen participating in this challenge.

After witnessing the craziest TikTok challenges ever to exist, would you still try them?

If they didn’t promote bodily harm and questionable decisions, maybe. But if you’re itching for a way to go viral on TikTok, there’s a safer way to do so. Check it out here!

Study In US Reality Revealed – Forget What You Think You Know

Study In US Reality Revealed – Forget What You Think You Know

When people hear that I used to study in US, they would ask me funny (but cute) questions, like:

“Is it true that the college parties are super wild?”

“Do guy athletes only wear letterman jackets?”

“Is it true that sororities and fraternities are huge in American universities?”

Some people watch too many American movies and TV shows, don’t they?

As someone who has been to the US and spent five years studying there, my reply to their questions is- Yes and No.

American colleges do have some of the things you would see in movies, but they are not as dramatic and ~fabulous~ as depicted on screen.

Let me tell you why.

But first, here’s a little backstory about how I could study in US.

Study in US for great travel opportunities. Image source: Unsplash

My First Choice Was Never To Study In US

As a Malaysian from a humble town, my initial plan was to just earn a degree, get a decent job, and live a comfortable life. I do admire America’s amazing variety of landscapes and skyscrapers that I’ve only seen on TV and the Internet, but to be honest, because of my family’s financial constraints, I never thought I could actually study in US.

But that’s all done and dusted now.

A Single Opportunity Changed Everything

I qualified for a scholarship offered by the University of California, Riverside.

“How?” You ask.

I was initially looking for a local university with the help of an education consultant from Eduloco. She actually told me to study in US instead, since I was always curious about life in America. To be honest – I didn’t expect her to remember what I said about the US, but I was touched that she had listened attentively.

She suggested the University of California after researching an institution that best suits my current budget and preference. I even got a scholarship as an international freshman!

My American Dream Came True

Yes, I am one of the few people who could actually say that.

My study in US experience was an unforgettable one.

The learning experience in UCR was so different from the student life in Malaysia. Discussions in class were always interesting and challenging. But that’s the fun part of it, because we’re always pushing ourselves to learn beyond what’s in the books. Lecturers and professors here are so welcoming and friendly to international students as well. I adapted quickly thanks to how nice everyone was!

I even traveled to places I could only dream of visiting before I studied in the US: Disneyland, San Diego Zoo, Yosemite National Park, and even the dreamy Santa Barbara. It’s a total beach lover’s paradise!

However, when I came back to Malaysia, I noticed that there are many who still don’t understand what it’s truly like to live and study in America.

Here’s the truth about studying in the US.

1) It’s Normal To NOT Graduate Within 4 Years

It is completely okay to take a little longer to complete your degree.

In fact, almost 58% of students take six years or more to graduate.

Various changes may affect a student’s duration of study, such as switching to a new major, or taking a 1-year internship. I personally took five years to complete my degree in Creative Writing as I was working part-time, and that was considered pretty fast!

Just remember that the duration of study should not signify the quality of one’s degree.

2) University = College

Here’s a little fun fact: University in America is called ‘college’.

While ‘college’ generally means an establishment for technical courses in most countries, it just means ‘university’ in the US. There’s simply no difference. Keep this in mind to avoid confusion when you’re in the US!

3) We Value The Freedom To Choose

When you study in US, you don’t have to decide what to study right away.

You’re supposed to take about five subjects per semester, and you can choose any subject you want, even if it’s irrelevant to your planned major. You can then declare a major from the subjects chosen as the degree you will graduate in. Take it as a ‘trial’ phase, if you may. 😉

I loved having the freedom to take various subjects before I decide on a major, simply because it gives me a better insight into my potential majors before I settle with one. I was actually torn between Psychology and Creative Writing at first. After attending classes for a month, I ended up choosing the latter!

4) Textbooks Are Pretty Expensive, So Be Resourceful

Ngl, my first semester nearly broke my bank.

Books are expensive when you study in US. Image source: Unsplash

Imagine my relief when I found Instagram and Facebook groups dedicated to selling second-hand textbooks. The pre-loved books I found were in good condition, so I didn’t see why you need to spend double the money for a brand-new book!

5) It’s Super Flexible Here

Do you know that you can change your major during your college years?

In the US, students are given the flexibility to change their course and even the college they’re attending. The best part is, you don’t need to spend extra money for it!

We sometimes discover our passion later than others, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to take action. Changing your major can actually decrease your stress level and give you a second chance to excel in college. I’ve had friends switching their majors midway, and they performed even better ever since!

So, when in doubt, study in US!

6) Work Part-Time While You Can

American actress Judy Greer once said, “I really believe waiting tables, and service industry jobs in general, make you a better person.”

Work part-time when you study in US. Image source: Unsplash

I worked as a part-time waitress for 2 years in a diner near the campus, and needless to say, I was humbled by the experience. I watched waitresses carry four plates of food at once and deliver them with ease. Why go to the gym when you can literally build muscles with food?

Besides, each customer had a different story to share. Listening to them really helped to develop my socializing skills!

I had the opportunity to meet with people from different walks of life; I learned to be patient; and most importantly, I’ve developed a huge respect for the job – it definitely wasn’t easy. Experience it yourself, and you’ll know why!

The mix of good (and bad) treatment from my customers taught me to be a better person. Now I tip the waiters at each restaurant I visit!

I hope you have a better idea of what it’s like to study in the US. With so many great colleges in America, I’m sure you’ll find a major that fits. And even if it doesn’t work out, you can always switch! 😁

A Newer Normal? Japanese Universities Embraces Online Teaching Despite Increased Vaccination Rates

A Newer Normal? Japan Embraces Online Teaching Despite Increased Vaccination Rates

KUALA LUMPUR, 7.9.2021 – Japan is embracing the implementation of online classes despite increasing vaccination rates among university students, which signifies their gradual return to campus life.

Many students were initially hesitant towards the universities’ decision to fully implement online learning as a means to work their way around the coronavirus pandemic. The shift was a new experience to them.

Professor Masaharu Okada, executive director of the Social Business Research Centre at Kyushu University said, “I continue to teach six hours each day, delivering online classes to hundreds of students taking my course. The experience is new for me and them, signaling major changes in the future of higher education in Japan.”

Students and even professors are now eager to proceed with the new teaching model due to various reasons.

A survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology showed that over 60% of students were somewhat satisfied about online classes.

With the freedom to study at their own pace, in turn, it also helps them to reduce the pressures of studying.

The shift to online learning is also well-received because students do not need to travel long hours to attend in-person lectures.

Moreover, students get to learn remotely in any location they want, which allows them to study from diverse locations instead of just in a lecture hall.

Despite the slow start, professors and stakeholders are now increasingly supportive of the new methodologies that incorporate effective online tools as they can better deliver complex topics in courses.

“I was accustomed to only lecturing in the classroom, a common practice in Japanese universities that had ignored technology as an effective teaching tool,” Okada added.

Additionally, a policy paper released on 3rd June further promoted remote and online education in Japanese universities.

The paper highlighted the benefits of combining online, in-person, and inter-university collaboration systems in higher education.

Some of the major changes cited are the promotion of data-driven learning as well as on-demand classrooms, which are courses made up of different content items, such as videos, PDF’s, and presentation slides that students can go through at their own pace.

According to the report, “Flexible approaches to higher education study encourage diversity based on the sharing of resources available on the Internet and strengthening the function of vocational education through industrial-academic collaboration.”

Professor Hiroshi Ota, director of the Centre for Global Education at Hitotsubashi University explained that Japan is already overdue in terms of adopting online teaching and learning in universities.

However, increased measures to implement online learning had caused problems to rise in universities, such as loneliness amongst students having difficulties in keeping up due to the lack of communication and socializing with their friends and professors.

Ota also predicted that online classes, which carry both positive and negative impacts, will kickstart a brand-new digitized era in Japan’s higher education industry.

US Universities Optimistic About The Return Of Int’l Students, Survey Reveals

US Universities Optimistic About The Return Of Int’l Students, Survey Reveals

KUALA LUMPUR, 3.9.2021 – Higher education providers in America are increasingly confident about the recovery of international students and study abroad enrolment.

Enrolment is expected to recover in phases following the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that brought major changes to student experience in universities and colleges.

A COVID-19 Snapshot Survey released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) found that American institutions are beginning to focus on bringing students back to campus. They do not intend to offer virtual classes only, and 86% of universities are already planning in-person study in fall 2021.

Moreover, the survey found that international student applications for the 2021-22 academic year have nearly doubled compared to the application record that was reported by institutions a year ago.

Hence, up to 90% of universities are planning to offer in-person study to international students as well.

In light of the universities’ optimism regarding the return of their students, Mirka Martel, head of research, evaluation, and learning of IIE said:

“Universities are prepping for a strong recovery in international education enrolment as they emerge from the pandemic.”

“We anticipate the recovery to come in phases, tied to vaccinations and travel guidelines. But there is definitely a concerted effort by US higher education institutions to re-open their campuses and encourage all students, including international students, to return to in-person study.”

Universities are now actively reaching out to students to get them to enroll and their main priority is to have more international students onboard, with up to 77% of institutions funding recruitment of international students using various methods: online recruitment, social media, and collaborating with current international students on other campuses.

Following their effort to recruit students from all around the world, 64% of universities are planning to provide vaccines to students, faculty, and staff on campus.

On the other hand, less than half (45%) do not require a vaccine prior to students’ arrival on campus.

Meanwhile, some institutions choose to remain cautious with their recruitment approach and deciding about future terms due to the uncertainty that a Covid-19 outbreak could bring.

What’s The Difference Between Advertising And Public Relations?

What's The Difference Between Advertising & Public Relations?

Curious what’s the difference between advertising and public relations?

Here are some simple definitions to help you begin:

Advertising is a form of communication that promotes a product, service, or need through persuasive messaging.

Public Relations (PR) focuses on forming and maintaining good relations with a company and the public through strategic communication.

Identifying The Difference Between Advertising & Public Relations

As these two fields are similar, it can be quite puzzling to pinpoint the contrast between these two services. To be completely honest with you, I used to mess up the difference between advertising and public relations too.

However, Key Difference settled the confusion with just four words: ‘advertising pays, public relations persuade’. Simple, right?

Not quite there yet? Fret not.

Let’s clear this confusion once and for all.

Media Coverage

Advertising companies pay for ad space or airtime on various media to publish an advertisement.

Remember those advertisements you see on TikTok, Instagram, Google and even websites? These are considered the ‘hot spots’ for advertisers as they are some of the most frequently used platforms by consumers.

On the other hand, the role of a public relations agency is to get free publicity for the company. This includes specific duties – news conferences, press releases, crisis management, editing speeches, and more – to get free media exposure for the company, its products, and services.

Extent Of Creative Control

Since advertising companies pay for the ad space, they usually have full control over the ad. This means they can decide how an advertisement should look or sound. Advertising companies usually have in-house graphic designers and content writers who can whip up amazing visuals and killer taglines for the ads.

Creative control shows the difference between advertising and public relations.

Full control or not, both advertising and PR still require a certain level of creativity in their works.

Public relations focus more on brand cultivation and creating a good image in the eyes of the public. Furthermore, PR can only pitch a concept or story – they have no control over how the media would present the idea, or if they would even use the idea at all.

Limited vs Unlimited ‘Shelf Life’

Another way to tell the difference between advertising and public relations is their ‘shelf life’.

Yes, services expire too – but not in the way food does!

Trends come and go super fast nowadays. When a new product is introduced to the public, what a public relations agency typically does is to organize a product launch or a conference before sending out their press releases to the respective media to be covered. And they can only be circulated once.

Advertising companies, however, can run their ads for as long as their budget allows.

Why? Simply because they pay for their ad space and airtime. They can literally run on forever if they have sufficient budget!

Freedom To Present Creativity

Advertising agencies have the freedom to express their creativity in ad campaigns.

If you haven’t watched Burger King’s Whopper burger video advertisement, do it now.

The 45-second video is the brainchild of the fast-food chain’s agency partners, INGO and David Miami and Publicis. It featured the transformation of a freshly made burger over an entire month. The ingredients – shown in great detail – grew moldy from top to bottom, and ended with the tagline, “The Beauty of No Artificial Preservatives”.

It’s gross, I know. But they made their point!

In public relations, you can’t just create a story out of the blue to promote a product. You must be able to generate buzz from the news or story that you’re writing for a product, while exercising your creativity to convince the news media to publish your work!

Targeting Audience vs Convincing Editors

You must identify your target audience and advertise accordingly when it comes to advertising.

Knowing the target audience helps advertisers to effectively advertise a product.

Some of the best ways to do so are to understand the benefits of the product, collect your target audience’s demographic data, send out customer surveys, and research competitors and trends. You wouldn’t advertise auto parts on a fashion and beauty website!

You’ll be convincing the editor or news director to cover your event or publish your article when it comes to public relations. Your ideas must be laid out properly with newsworthy, relevant, and current ideas that fit existing trends. It may sound pretty challenging, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite an interesting part of the job!

Getting Into The Minds Of Consumers

Credibility plays a huge role in determining a customer’s buying decision.

In advertising, consumers know when you’re trying to sell them something.

This in turn will make advertisements appear to have less credibility than the press releases and event coverage done by a PR agency.

In public relations, when consumers read a product article or watch its coverage event on TV, they view it as something credible and unbiased. Instead of just blatantly selling them something, it feels more like a journey towards discovering the product through articles and press releases.

Writing Style

Buy Now! Limited Time Only! Call Us Today!

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of these advertising mantras around.

They are called CTA, or Call-To-Action, an instruction used by advertisers to convince you to purchase a product or subscribe to a service.

Over the years, advertisers have created witty, funny, and even ironic CTAs just to make you hit the purchase button. They may sound fantastical (The Magic Begins), and some may feel irresistible (Launch. DO NOT PRESS). Either way, when you click the button, that means their mojo worked!

A witty phrase can ignite curiosity in customers.

However, that is not the case in public relations. Your press releases and conference speeches must be professionally written in a no-nonsense format. You want to maintain your client’s reputation, not ruin it!

There you have it! I hope this clears up any confusion regarding the difference between advertising and public relations!
