Study Abroad Back On Track As Global Vaccination Rate Increases

KUALA LUMPUR, 28.9.2021 – The rise of the global vaccination rate gives hope to higher education institutions worldwide that are eager to resume their operations and open their gates to international students.

The public feels more confident, comfortable, and safe to travel around as nearly half of the world population is already vaccinated with their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

Popular study abroad destinations have shown a positive response towards the vaccination plan as more than half of these countries’ population are fully vaccinated: United States (54.61%), United Kingdom (65.59%), Canada (70.33%), Europe (51.74%), and the European Union (62.22%).

Meanwhile, only 2.2% of people in low-income countries are yet to receive one dose of the vaccine, according to Our World In Data.

In response to the speedy global vaccination rate, universities worldwide are preparing for in-person classes again in hopes for giving students an enriched learning experience.

Most colleges in the United States are already preparing students and staff for on-campus learning in the Fall term. More than 80% of the institutions announced that students who are returning for in-person classes must be vaccinated first.

Universities in the United Kingdom are also adopting a hybrid approach to teaching: most classes will be taught in-person with some elements remaining online.

Students who apply now may have a better chance of getting accepted quickly compared to those who wait until the next year.

Delaying their intake could lead to increased traffic and volume of applications – students might get shortlisted instead of getting accepted right away.

Moreover, European countries are planning to move towards ending the mandatory use of face masks with Covid-19 cases dropping throughout the European continent.

Face masks are no longer compulsory outdoors in France and Belgium, except for crowded areas and in public transportations.

Austria had also lifted the mandatory use of face masks indoors and outdoors beginning from July 1. Spain and Germany are also planning to end the face masks rule, although a final decision has not been confirmed.

Group Mates From Hell: How To Handle Them Like A Bawse

Group Mates From Hell: How To Handle Them Like A Bawse

When there is an assignment, there are certain group mates that you will meet (and want to avoid):

  • The Invisible Person – This person exists in class, but only by name. He hardly replies to your texts.
  • The Smartphone Addict – Their eyes are glued to their phones and they never participate.
  • The Last-Minute Friend – They will give you mini heart attacks with their very last-minute submission.
  • The Dilly-Dally – They delay every task in hand, even if it’s as simple as sending an email.
  • The Controlling Mother – This person never stops nagging from Day 1 and trusts no one.

To make things worse, some shamelessly ride on your coat tails and get the same credit when everyone else sacrifices their sleep to complete the assignment.

If this reminds you of someone you know, I’m sorry that you have to go through this.

But if this does not sound familiar, chances are, you’re one of them. Just kidding.

There are also people who understand the assignment and play their parts in the group perfectly. Bless their souls. 😇

Whichever side you’re on, I’m sure you will benefit from reading this.

I had my fair share of difficult group mates and it was a tiring and traumatic experience.

Earning my degree with sweat and tears, I’ve gained the know-how when it comes to dealing with these type of group mates: You cannot let them win.

Easier said than done, right?

Hear me out: I can assure you that these tips will help you deal with even the most difficult person in a group assignment – with a little resilience, that is.

Without further ado, here are some tips to handle the group mates from hell.

Promote Group Discussions And Get Everyone To Participate

Everyone can take a turn to suggest ideas or an area that they are confident to work on.

If some of them remain uncooperative, you can direct an open-ended question to a member. This gives them no choice but to stop what they are doing, like finally putting down their phones and focus on the discussion.

Group mates discussing in a room. Image source: Pexels

Don’t dismiss them if their ideas are not as constructive as the rest. Instead, appreciate their willingness to participate. This is will help introverted group mates come out of their shell too!

For example, ask what their talents or strengths are that may contribute to the project. Some people just need a little push, so remain positive and don’t give up!

Be Strict With Group Deadlines

A deadline exists for a reason.

Although everyone works at their own pace, some individuals have the habit of last-minute submissions. This will cause them to pull the entire group down. If this happens to your team, you can approach the particular member personally and ask that they cooperate.

If your group member persists to be uncooperative, it’s time to talk to your lecturer about the person’s problematic behavior. Remember not to let your emotions get the better of you. This means not badmouthing or accusing said group mate. You want to solve an issue, not cause the other person to fail the subject!

Assure Your Group Mates That You Are Trustworthy

From emails to group chats, this person constantly bugs everyone to point out every single detail of the assignment. They may even have an entire project planned out on their own!

Two girls talking.

It is good that this person is proactive..until they care too much and begin taking on too much work load because they have trust issues. This is what I call a control freak.

Let them know that you and the rest of the team are capable of doing your own work. You should also tell them how much you appreciate their effort and remind them that you will get through this assignment together, as a team.

Remove The Person From Your Group As A Last Resort

I repeat, as a last resort.

Everyone is a student, and every student wishes to pass their subjects and graduate.

Removing an uncooperative member mid-semester may finally restore peace and balance to your group. However, keep in mind that this person may fail the subject if they had to start a supposed group assignment from scratch.

Sure, it is unfair for each member of the group to do the person’s extra work, but you should first justify their reasons before taking any action (e.g. family, financial, or personal issues).

So, proceed with this step only after you’ve discussed with your group mates. Who knows, maybe a word from your lecturer could knock them back to their senses. 😁

A healthy group climate is also crucial for everyone to be productive and effective. With that being said, here are some practices that can help you build a good rapport among group mates:

1) Responsibility And Accountability

All members can discuss and distribute tasks accordingly. This gives members a responsibility to complete their parts and thus, will be held accountable for them.

2) Constructive Feedback And Criticism

A harmonious group allows you to provide and receive feedback. Constructive feedback can help the team focus on the ideas instead of the individual, which helps build a mature discussion without involving personal feelings.

3) Clear Organization And Task Distribution

A clear plan helps to keep your group mates focused on their tasks. An organized team is also capable of managing time wisely and achieving goals.

4) Understanding Your Role In The Team

Group mates assigning roles in front of board. Image source: Pexels

Some members are natural-born leaders, while some are better at supporting others. Either way, each member plays a vital role in ensuring the success of a group assignment. Rotating your roles is a good way to realize which roles that everyone is best suited for.

5) Problem Solving As A Team

Combining the skills above, you and your group mates can now strategize and develop the best approach to complete the assignment. As everyone is already clear with their responsibilities and roles, they can contribute to the decision-making process as well as become effective and valuable members of the group.

If certain group mates can be so challenging to deal with, wait until you see the types of people you will meet at work. But that is a story for another day!

Sussex University Offers £5,000 To Double-Jabbed Students

Sussex University Offers £5,000 To Double-Jabbed Students

KUALA LUMPUR, 22.9.2021 – Sussex University students who provide proof that they have been double-vaccinated against Covid-19 will stand a chance to receive cash prizes from the institution.

The prize draw that will take place at the end of November gives students more time to get their vaccination. The draw will then randomly select 10 lucky winners to receive £5,000 as long as they can prove that they are indeed double-jabbed or exempt.

Vice-chancellor, Professor Adam Tickell denied that the draw amounts to ‘bribing students’ to get their vaccination.

He said, “We’re going to automatically enter every student in, and unless they have said they want to opt out, after we’ve given them the opportunity to have vaccines – this will be about 12 weeks after the announcement – we’ll just randomly choose 10 names.”

He also emphasized that the draw is meant to serve as an incentive to encourage more students to get their jabs in hopes for teaching to resume to normal as soon as possible when summer comes.

Prof Tickell added: “We know that many students will have already had their vaccines or are planning to. If we can boost those numbers even slightly through a simple intervention like this, then of course we are going to do so.

Whilst these are significant prizes for our students, the cost to the university is small compared with the human, social and financial cost if students were to experience the kind of disruption we faced last year.”

Michelle Donelan, the Minister of State for Universities (Department of Education) encouraged eligible students to complete their vaccine doses. She believes that the vaccine is the best way for students to regain their rights to an enriching campus life.

“The department is encouraging universities to look at creative ways to boost uptake and to discuss the possibility of pop-up centres with local health partners – making it quick and easy for students to grab a jab,” she explained.

As more higher education institutes are encouraging students to be fully vaccinated, there are hopes that campus life and in-person classes are set to return to normal.

Psychology Grows In Popularity As Malaysians’ Top Career Path

Psychology Grows In Popularity As Malaysians’ Top Career Path

KUALA LUMPUR, 17.9.2021 – Higher education students in Malaysia now seek a degree in Psychology as the Covid-19 pandemic shows no sign of ending, with jobs in clinical and organizational psychology among the top career choices.

Industries are hiring more organizational psychologists to aid in recruitment, training, employee assistance programs, and more.

They are professionals whose main focus is to apply psychological principles to help an organization improve the work environment as well as employee performance, communication, satisfaction, and safety.

According to research about The Status of Clinical Psychologist in Malaysia penned by Dr Noor Hassline Mohamed (Universiti Malaysia Sabah), “There is currently a severe shortage of clinical psychologists where the ratio of a clinical psychologist is only 1:980,000.”

As of 2021, the ideal ratio of clinical psychologists and Malaysian population is 1:5,000, which signifies the nation’s dire needs for more psychologists in this particular field.

As clinical psychologists are among the highly sought-after career path among local psychology graduates, there is hope for the numbers to improve.

Meanwhile, educational psychologists are sought after by the education industry to help with support programs and the learning experience of students.

While there are assumptions that overseas-trained professionals can provide a better quality of consultation, Dr Steve Janssen, Professor of Psychology at University of Nottingham Malaysia stated that a majority of the education and training in psychology provided by local universities are at par with international standards.

“Although the quality of the programs in Malaysia varies, those that are accredited internationally tend to be excellent,” he says.

He also added that internationally accredited programs would mainly benefit students who plan to continue their postgraduate studies overseas.

Dr Janssen also believes that the misconception about the limited opportunities psychology graduates receive – working as counsellors and in human resources – is changing.

With home quarantine, travel restrictions, and movement control orders causing distress and anxiety among people, mental health is slowly acknowledged as an issue that is equally important to their overall well-being.

Dr Janssen adds: “People are starting to understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. The new generation is also normalizing the attitude of putting things out in the open instead of suffering in silence, which is why psychology has emerged to be the most-searched course among Malaysian students.

People need help coping with social isolation, loss of loved ones, and the consequences of prolonged online learning on children. As such, clinical psychologists, educational psychologists and cognitive psychologists have gained popularity”.

8 Best Ways To Handle A Country With Four Seasons

8 Best Ways To Handle A Country With Four Seasons

What is your favorite season?

To be honest, I can’t really choose.

With butterflies and golden daffodils in Spring; a warm sunrise and outdoor dining in Summer; colour-changing leaves accompanied with crisp, cool air in Autumn; and sipping pumpkin spice latte in cozy knitwear in Winter – all four seasons have their own appeal!

Study abroad to experience all seasons in a year.

If you’re curious about what it’s like living in a country with four seasons, I advise you to study abroad.

The reason is simple: you get the best of FOUR seasons in a country!

Some study abroad destinations that have four seasons are: Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, certain parts of the United States, and more. You can check out some of our study abroad programs here.

Moving to another country to study abroad is fun and all, but one can easily get distracted by the excitement and end up straying from the most important part – the preparation.

Before we begin, here are some bite-sized facts about the four seasons that you shouldn’t miss!

        1. The correct order of the seasons is: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
        2. Spring starts when day and night are at the same length.
        3. Thunderstorms are more frequent in Summer.
        4. The days can get shorter in Autumn.
        5. When Winter comes, about 10% of the world’s species hibernate.

Moving to a four-season country needs thorough planning and commitment. Here’s some of the things to consider before you study abroad!

Be Clear About The Weather

Identify the season or even the weather on the date of your arrival. You don’t want to be fully packed with winter gear when you’re two weeks shy of Spring. It will be a literal hot mess!

Mobile applications such as Weather Underground and MyRadar Weather Radar can accurately inform you about the weather of your current location. Keeping up to date with the weather can really make a difference, especially if there is a storm coming your way!

Hurricane Hound, Natural Disaster Monitor, and Disaster Alert can send warnings regarding hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters. These apps will come in handy if you’re living in natural disaster-prone countries, so make sure to have at least one of them downloaded!

Know What You’re Bringing

I was today years old when I found out that there are more than nine types of outerwear.

Coming from Malaysia, a tropical country, I only know one type of outerwear. And I call it..a jacket.

So, when I had to choose a specific outerwear among parkas, pea coats, trench coats, duffel coats, windbreakers, and bomber jackets, you can imagine my confusion.

And then comes the footwear – ankle boots, leather boots, snow boots, rain boots, waterproof boots – I lost count.

Just be sure to know the type of clothing that best suits the season and weather of the country you’re going to.

Your Wardrobe Changes According To Season

Time to whip out your Fashion Week styles with the seasons and weather as your fashion consultant.

If you’re a fashion lover, you will enjoy the thrill of dressing up in completely different styles in a country with four seasons. Imagine embracing your Hot Girl Summer in Summer, putting on cute floral dresses in Spring, and showing off the collection of outerwear you have in Autumn and Winter.

Layer Your Clothing Well In Winter

As the saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. It is best to observe the locals and what they wear, regardless of your study abroad destination.

Layering up during Winter is crucial as it helps to maintain your core body heat. Here’s how to effectively layer up to stay warm despite the freezing cold:

  • Start with a regular, snug-fitting undershirt. (e.g. T-shirts, tank-tops, long-sleeved T-shirts)
  • Put on a thin mid-layer. Wool or polyester, or a combination of the two will suffice.
  • Wear an outerwear of your choice, according to how cold or windy it is. Top it off with a waterproof layer.
  • For your lower body, put on inner leggings or runner’s tights before your ordinary pants.
  • If the weather is frigid, keep your hands and feet warm by wearing gloves and insulated boots. Put on a cloth face mask for the extra warmth.

I had lived in Korea for four months for a Winter Student Exchange Program, and bought most of my winter clothing according to the advice of my Korean friends. Needless to say, I managed to stay warm and comfortable without looking like a fashion disaster.

They’ve lived there all their lives, so listening to their advice is a smart move!

‘Sunny’ Is Just A Figure of Speech

Sorry to disappoint, but sunniness does not guarantee a warm day.

In temperate countries where the weather is not excessively hot or cold, you can still feel the chill. The sun is mere decoration in the sky. Even sea temperatures can be cold despite the so-called summer – you can bid your swimsuit goodbye.

If there’s one good thing about it, it’s that you’ll never take the warmth of the sun for granted.

Spring Is The Best Season

If there’s anything to prepare for Spring, it’s a good camera and picnic supplies.

It is the best time for a picnic or a photoshoot session with friends because everywhere is the perfect background for an Insta-worthy post!

Girl posing on top of red flowers. Image source: Pexels

With the perfect balance of warm and cool weather, flowers in bloom and extra hours of daylight, and not to forget, Easter – there’s nothing to dislike about Spring.

Even jogging feels like a sightseeing tour in a garden of flowers when it’s Springtime!

Embrace The Beautiful Mess of Autumn

Autumns can get messy.

But hear me out – it’s such a beautiful mess that you’d forgive the heaps of leaves that you have to sweep every day.

It can be frustrating when you have to clean the yard daily, only to find a new batch of leaves eagerly covering it up again. But there’s something about the streaks of red, yellow, and orange decorating the pavement that feels so magical. The whole neighborhood just looks like a fairytale town!

So, be prepared for a leafy mess, or embrace the beauty of it just like I do. 🙂

Summer And Winter Sales Are The Best

If you want to save big bucks, Summer and Winter sales will satisfy the shopaholic in you. They are both HUGE events in European countries, and other countries are also hopping on the trend.

Once you get used to life in a four-season country, you will find yourself anticipating these two sales as much as the locals do. Besides, your wallet will thank you for your patience, because there will be up to 50% percent discount on clothes, electrical appliances, gadgets, and even luxury goods!

‘Metaverse’, Internet’s Next Evolution Takes Over South Korea’s Gen MZ

‘Metaverse’, Internet’s Next Evolution Takes Over South Korea’s Gen MZ

KUALA LUMPUR, 14.9.2021 – ‘Metaverse’, a seemingly futuristic prospect to the rest of the world is potentially becoming the reality of many South Koreans, most notably Generation MZ or Gen MZ.

Derived from the words ‘meta’ (beyond) and ‘universe’, the Metaverse is described as a virtual space in digital environments where users can play online games, use social media, utilize virtual reality, and more.

Meanwhile, Generation MZ is a term coined from the merging of Millennials and Generation Z, which consists of individuals born between 1981 and the early 2010s.

As South Korea’s home prices and income inequality exponentially soar throughout recent years, Gen MZ is turning to the alternative online world to carry out virtual activities that they wouldn’t be able to achieve otherwise.

For example, users of the metaverse can create digital avatars and use them to play games, hang out with friends, and even host a luxurious party.

While the extent and duration of a full replication of real life remain uncertain, South Koreans continue to be drawn towards the appeal of the metaverse.

A South Korean engineer, Shaun, who had insisted on being identified by his avatar’s name, made a huge investment into his own virtual land with the intention to turn it into a long-term investment. The idea of a metaverse appealed to Shaun as the construction of the virtual world will not face any issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, such as increased costs and labor shortages.

Shaun also believed that his project, which is based in Decentraland (one of the metaverse platforms that operate using Ethereum or blockchain) can potentially lead to a profitable business model in a few years’ time.

“I’m planning to design my building which is suitable to host K-pop live performances and K-drama screenings,” the 30-year-old said.

Metaverse also appeals to users who want to build cities and create businesses on a virtual land.

By purchasing ‘land’ in the virtual world, the owners can host real businesses just like in the real world, such as a nightclub as well as online game rooms, something which the video game Fortnite is already doing.

Just like in the real world, the value of the virtual land can increase based on the success of a business as well as the community’s support.

The scale of its influence in South Korea is fortified with the participation of telecom firms, investment managers, and even the government, such as:

Samsung Asset Management with its Samsung Global Metaverse Fund;

SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile carrier with its metaverse that users can host and attend meetings with animated avatars; and

The Ministry of Science and ICT with a 604.4 trillion won budget for 2022 in hopes of leading in the metaverse industry and to adopt metaverse as a new industry.

With the metaverse gaining popularity in South Korea, a technologically advanced and digitally connected country, it is no surprise that the rest of the world will soon follow suit.

How Virtual Reality Will Transform Learning In Education

How Virtual Reality Will Transform Learning In Education

KUALA LUMPUR, 9.9.2021 – Education has continuously evolved throughout the years.

Technology is improving with better ways to make education more affordable and seamless for everyone. Heavy textbooks are turned into e-books and modern search engines replace long nights of research at the library. With the implementation of online learning, it seems natural that virtual reality is the next step in advancing education.

However, in a world of digital devices, students have a lower attention span and are more prone to distractions. They find it more difficult to absorb information compared to previous generations who grew up studying in a traditional classroom.

Virtual reality (VR) can provide students with a more engaging educational experience by creating a virtual world. The premise of a digital world offers an immersive experience that allows them to see, study, and interact with information. Not only do students learn better through experience, but being immersed in a world of information will inspire them to fully understand it.

It’s no secret that many students get bored with the traditional teaching methods of reading and writing. With VR, students are encouraged to interact with each other and the information around them, making way for group discussions and creative brainstorming.

VR can be particularly useful for topics related to geography and history by creating a digital world immersed with a sense of place and time. Think history lessons where you can visit any place in time and reconstruct abandoned ruins from centuries ago – that’s definitely a more interesting way to learn about the past!

VR technology can also be good training for specialized fields such as medicine, healthcare, and manufacturing. In most cases, acquiring real-world experience in healthcare would be impossible as it usually revolves around life and death situations. However, with VR it is possible for medical students to train their surgical skills and learn the procedure of caring for patients without any risk involved.

Manufacturing is also another industry where one wrong move can result in life-threatening situations. For example, an employee who isn’t familiar with machine controls might accidentally injure themselves or a fellow colleague. Hence, VR offers the opportunity to master the controls and understand how to operate the system.

Another benefit to having virtual reality in education is its ability to provide career exposure to students. Students can get a glimpse of how it’s like to work in a specific field and explore other career choices. They can also familiarize themselves with issues commonly faced in their field and develop effective problem-solving skills.

As a result, real life experience becomes familiar to students. They are able to apply their knowledge to real world situations and broaden their understanding on a career. That way, they can decide for themselves if it is something they want to pursue.

The immersive experience of Virtual Reality in education can motivate students to unleash their imagination and inspire bright, innovative minds. Faced with a world of unparalleled limits, students will be pushed to think out of the box, adapt to change, and transform the world.
