Fields of Electrical Engineering

There are five fields of Electrical Engineering that you can choose from as your major. You can pick from these specializations:

Electrical Engineering

This is a more generic field related to the planning, design, development, and management of electrical devices and systems. Your role as an electrical engineer is to research, design, and develop reliable systems and devices that can help improve consumers’ quality of life.

Nuclear Engineering

Experience the best of both worlds in Nuclear Engineering by combining elements of engineering and science. There are many areas in nuclear engineering, each with specific significance to the field. From mining nuclear materials to designing nuclear reactors, this will be an eye-opening experience for budding nuclear engineers.

Quantum Computing

In quantum computers, there are quantum bits that could help process much more data than regular computers. These quantum bits or qubits are invaluable when it comes to cracking complex encryption and searching in a broad database. Qubits also help in moulding biological drugs and molecules at an atomic level.

Energy and Power Engineering

This field requires engineers to generate and deliver electric energy to aid in customers’ economical needs while improving environmental quality. As a flexible and one of the cleanest energy supplies, the latest trend in energy and power engineering is to create and convert more renewable and low carbon energy sources into electricity.

Telecommunications Engineering

Telecommunications Engineering focuses on communicating at a distance. The growing trend of digital and wireless networks requires more engineers with this expertise.

What are the skills needed?

How long will I study this program?

The study duration could vary from one institute to another. However, as a general estimate, we have compiled a general estimate of the duration according to the study levels and qualifications.

  • Foundation/Diploma: 1 – 2.5 Years
  • Bachelor’s Degree: 4 Years
  • Master’s: 1 – 2 Years
  • PhD: 3 Years

What are the entry requirements for this qualification?

  • Foundation/Diploma:
    • Minimum 5 credits in the relevant subjects
  • Degree:
    • STPM: Minimum CGPA 2.00 in Maths and Physics
    • A-Levels: Minimum 2Es in Maths and Physics
    • SAM: Minimum ATAR 60 including Maths and Physics
    • CPU: Average of 60% in 6 subjects including Maths and Physics
    • UEC: Grade B in at least 3 subjects including Maths, Physics, and other relevant subjects
  • Master’s:
    • A relevant Bachelor’s Degree with honours or CGPA 2.75 and above
  • PhD:
    • A Master’s Degree in relevant field with evidence of adequate research or work experiences to satisfaction of Senate
