Introduction to Mathematics

So, what is mathematics?

Just like any other subject, Mathematics covers different sub subjects. These are statistics, math itself and operational research. Knowing basic math is a general requirement to get into universities, however, being able to major in math is a different story. You have to have the passion, patience and capacity to be able to understand numbers.

Math is used to solve problems in our daily lives. When we go to the supermarket, math is used to calculate the prices and groceries we need. When we look at the clock, we apply the same concept to tell the time. Mathematics also allows us to produce massive profit through careful understanding and analysis of data, especially if it is about stocks, businesses, or even your daily budget allowance.

Fields of Mathematics

Mathematics is a broad field that is divided into 2 branches; pure and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics is the study of mathematical concepts. Results obtained from these studies are then used to solve real-world problems, known as applied mathematics.

The major branches of Mathematics are:

Arithmetic: One of the oldest branch of mathematics. Used to calculate numbers according to the basic operations of multiply, subtract and add. Students and working adults use it to calculate their daily expenses and perform basic calculations.

Algebra: The study of mathematical symbols to solve algebraic equations. This involves rules of operations, algebraic structures, and polynomial equations.

Geometry: A practical branch of Mathematics that studies the properties of shapes and figures such as points, lines, surfaces, and shapes. The manufacturing industry depends on Geometry to measure circumference and area before building a structure.

Trignometry: Deals with the study of angles and the sides of triangles. It was first derived from two Greek words, Trignon (meaning triangle) and Metron (meaning measure).

Calculus: Deals with the study of continuous change and predict its consequences. It can also be said to be the study of the functions of time. Used in fields like engineering, physics, and economics.

What will you study?

As mentioned, Mathematics covers a lot of ground and therefore has different sub subjects that are related to each other.

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra Basics
  • Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra I
  • Algebra II
  • Basic Geometry
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Precalculus
  • Differential Calculus
  • Integral Calculus
  • Multivariable Calculus
  • Differential Equations
  • Linear Algebra

Why should you study Mathematics?

Be a problem-solver: Maths is all about solving problems. You will learn how solve to complex equations, but the skills you develop in studying mathematical functions will polish your problem-solving abilities to spot patterns, visualize the big picture, work systematically, and use logical reasoning to arrive at a conclusion.

Develop transferrable skills: Mathematics teaches you skills that can be transferred across different industries and used in personal situations. These include data analysis, time management, decision-making, critical thinking and solid organization skills.

Excellent graduate prospects: The subjects you study are considered to be highly valuable by employers. Thus, a degree in Mathematics will prep you for a wide range of career choices, which opens the path to a high-earning and successful career in accounting, engineering, science, banking, business, and more.
