Subclass 500 Student Visa
With this Visa, you can stay in Australia for up to 5 years to pursue your full-time study at an educational institution. You are also permitted to travel in and out of Australia. You can work up to 40 hours for every 2-week period once your course commences.
To be eligible, you must:
1. Provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for a full-time course in Australia. The course must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
2. Provide evidence of your English language proficiency.
3. Be covered by the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) that is approved by an Australian health insurance provider. It must be valid throughout your entire stay in Australia.
4. Meet health and character requirements.
5. Provide financial evidence that you are capable to pay for your course and stay in Australia.
Exemptions
You are exempt from presenting a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) if you:
- Are enrolled in a full-time course or training under a scholarship scheme approved by the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. Please provide a supporting document.
- Received sponsor by the Australian Department of Defence. Please provide a supporting document.
- Are a postgraduate research student staying in Australia while waiting for your thesis result. Please provide a supporting document from your education provider.
What You Need

When To Apply
International students / from outside Australia:
- You should apply at least 6 weeks before your course begins.
Online Visa Application
The application must be done online. Please follow the following steps:
- Create and log in into your ImmiAccount.
- Attach all the required documents.
- Pay the visa application fee.
Fees
- You must pay AUD620 at the last step of your Student Visa application procedure, unless you are exempt.
- If you are unable to complete your course within the duration of your Visa validity due to Covid-19, you may be eligible for a fee waiver.

Health Insurance
- Your health insurance must be enough to cover your entire stay in Australia.
- You must be covered by the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from an approved Australian health insurance provider.
- Please note that the cover starts from the day of your arrival in Australia, and not from your course commencement date.
How To Apply For Your OSHC
- You can approach an approved health insurance provider and pay for your policy. Alternatively, your education provider or agent will arrange for you to have an OSHC.
Duration of Stay
- This Visa is only valid up to 5 years. Your course length will determine the duration of your stay.
Extended Stay
- You are required to apply for a new Student Visa if you wish to continue studying in Australia
- If your Visa expires before your graduation, you might be allowed a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600). Please provide a letter from your education provider and state the date of your graduation.
- If your purpose of extending your stay is unrelated to studying, you must apply for a different type of Visa, and not the student Visa (Subclass 500).
English Language Requirements
- You are required to provide proof of English language proficiency in the form of a test score in an English language test approved by the Department.
- The test result is only valid for your Visa application for 2 years.

Biometric
- You are required to provide your biometrics before your travel to Australia. The biometrics consist of details that can be used to proof your identity, such as fingerprints and facial image.
Visa Outcome

The decision of your Student Visa application will be delivered in writing, with this information:
·Your Visa grant number
·Your Visa expiry date
· Your Visa conditions - You must keep a copy of the written decision with you when you are in Australia.
- If your application is refused, we will include reasons and inform you if you are eligible to review the decision. Your application fee will not be refunded if the application is refused.
